Recently I had a thought. There are two things which I enjoy; cigars and technology. My cigars are taken care of thanks to the Groupon Coupons page for JR Cigar, and my technology fix is supplied by by ever updating cellphone.
Right at that moment I saw a teenager smoking an e-cigarette and I wondered if my two loves had finally come together.
You probably know, E-Cigarettes have been around for a while now, in varying forms and names such as e-cigs or vapes. And while the general understanding is that they are better for you than smoking, do you really know why? Or if it’s true?
I didn’t. Which is why I decided to do a little bit of research into how they work, and their advantages over smoking.
The basic items which go into making an e-cig (we’ll call them an e-cig for short namesake) are pretty basic: A small battery, a cartridge which contains the liquid, a heating element, a sensor to activate the process when you inhale.
This is all packed into a small product which looks remarkably like a cigarette. Many brands even have a small LED at the end of the e-cig to simulate smoking.
The battery is charged via USB and is likely to be micro-USB.
To use an e-cig, you load the cartridge with the product you’re ‘vaping.’ This is likely to be a flavored fluid of varying tastes.
Once installed, a simple push of a button on the outside of the device will activate the heating element and ‘vaporize’ the liquid inside the cartridge.
At the same time, this occurs, the user would be inhaling the vapor.
Imagine those old fog machine at the school discos, only instead of unappealing smelling and tasting fog, it was a delicious and sweet strawberry flavor.
Now to the important part; are they better than cigarettes?
It’s firstly important to note that you can load a non-nicotine or tobacco-based product into an e-cig. If you just enjoy the flavored smoke or are transitioning to nonsmoking.
As for their direct alternatives, their impacts are similar.
Yes, the use of a vaping device decreases the number of chemicals which make up a cigarette. However, the primary ingredients are still in there: nicotine and tobacco.
If you were to ask me if I would prefer to smoke or to vape, I would definitely say neither.
